GAP Services

GAP offers two types of services: (1) Intensive academic program to overcome students' deficiencies in algebra, reading and English and (2) teacher/faculty training for high school teachers and college faculty.

Intensive Academic Program for Students

  • A daily after school, 3 hours per day, program for students, who are still in high school, and who are doing poorly in math, reading, and English and who want to graduate from high school rather than drop out..
  • A summer eight-week, 4 hours per day, intensive academic program for students who have graduated from high school but who will be required to take remedial math, reading and/or English courses prior to taking college-level courses.

Teacher/Faculty Enhancement Training and Mentoring:

  • A two-week, 6 hours per day, enhancement training in the GAP pedagogy which will be offered either in Washington, DC, or in a location convenient to the teachers.
  • A follow-up two-week mentoring program that will be offered throughout the whole semester in their schools for those who have successfully completed the initial GAP pedagogy training.

Teachers will receive GAP Trainer Certification after successfully completing both parts of this training. This enhancement training and mentoring is designed to assist both the secondary and post-secondary institutions in their capacity building.

Experience with Faculty Enhancement Training

  • A one-week training workshop for enhancing pedagogical skills was first conducted for a faculty group of 14 members from the chemistry and physics department in December of 2005. An organic chemistry professor was later mentored for over 18 months (2007 - 2009). As a result of this training and mentoring, the entire course in organic chemistry has been transposed to improve students' success. For a complete miracle of this effort, read the article, "A Miracle in Organic Chemistry"
  • In May of 2006, a second two-week training workshop for enhancing pedagogical skills was conducted for a faculty group of 9 members from the mathematics department. To read about what these faculty members have to say about the workshop, click on, workshop evaluations, May 2006.
  • In June of 2006, a third one-week training workshop for enhancing pedagogical skills was conducted for a faculty group of 3 members from the mathematics department. To read about what these faculty members have to say about the workshop, click on, workshop evaluations, June 2006.

Three faculty members from the last two groups of faculty members, who received this training and mentoring, are now the certified traines for the math program.

Past Successes With GAP's Strategies

Retention rates of 95-100% in intoductory college physics I and II. Compare these rates with the national retention rate of 25-40% for such courses. For further information on this report

Organic Chemistry I Retention and Success Rates --In an email from a colleague [Dr. Hajiyani], "he reports classroom retention doubled (from 50% to 97%) and student success tripled (from 30% to 90%)". Read more about this unusual success .
